Having headaches on 15 or more days per month qualifies as chronic daily headache — a condition affecting approximately 4-5% of the global population. While debilitating, these headaches are often maintained by treatable factors.
Most Common Types
Chronic tension-type headache: A bilateral, pressing headache of mild-to-moderate intensity. Often described as a "band around the head." Worsened by stress, poor posture, and jaw clenching.
Chronic migraine: Migraine features (throbbing, one-sided, nausea, light sensitivity) occurring 15+ days per month, with at least 8 days meeting full migraine criteria.
Medication overuse headache (MOH): Perhaps the most important and underrecognized cause. Regular use of pain relievers (more than 10-15 days per month, depending on the medication type) paradoxically increases headache frequency. This creates a vicious cycle.
New daily persistent headache (NDPH): A distinct headache that begins abruptly and persists daily from onset, often following a viral illness or stressful event.
Contributing Factors
- Chronic stress and inadequate stress management
- Poor sleep habits or sleep disorders
- Excessive caffeine (or caffeine withdrawal)
- Dehydration
- Poor ergonomics (desk posture, screen height)
- Undiagnosed vision problems
Treatment Approach
The key to managing daily headaches is identifying and addressing the perpetuating factors rather than relying on frequent pain medication.
1. Medication audit: Gradually reduce overused pain relievers under medical supervision
2. Preventive medication when appropriate (prescribed by a physician)
3. Lifestyle optimization: regular sleep schedule, hydration, exercise
4. Stress management techniques and cognitive behavioral therapy
5. Physical therapy for postural issues
When to Worry
Seek urgent evaluation for headaches that are progressively worsening, accompanied by fever and stiff neck, triggered by exertion or coughing, or represent a dramatic change from your usual headache pattern.
